The bone extension technique according to Ilisarow without using bone tissue has also been established in hand surgery for application on small bones. After amputation injuries, for example, on loss of thumb, we can extend the remaining portion of the bone by attaching a so-called ring fixer. When the new bone grows, the thumb part is extended by up to 3 cm. This procedure according to Ilisarow is also used for some types of inherent malformations of the hand.
