ganglion |
In ganglion of the wrist, the wrist cap is convexed and filled with
secretion. The wrist ganglion is a relatively frequent malady and
can recur. Most affected are young girls and women with very loose
connective tissue identifiable by highly overstretched joints, excess
strain during sports or when working can contribute too. The wrist
ganglion is generally - when not under strain - not painful and so
in most cases is a cosmetic defect.
The treatment
A painful ganglion even when resting can be rectified through dotting,
i.e. sucking out the secretion using a canula, for most however only
a temporary relief. In a subsequent surgical procedure under local
or general anaesthesia, the corresponding tissue is removed. However,
if larger portions of the wrist cap are affected, the hand surgeon
must close or replace it with plastic.
After the operation, it is necessary to apply a fixed bandage for
2 weeks. Then, exercises at home or physiotherapy is recommended.
