Dupuytren contraction
Handchirurgie
In the dupuytren syndrome, named after a French Surgeon, a kind of tissue hardening causes the sinews in the hand "to get stuck", which can slowly cause permanent bending of one or more fingers. The sinews are fully healthy, even if the sinewy strands in the hollow of the hand claim to be otherwise. The ailment appears in phases. The dupuytren contraction occurs often in North Europe, astonishingly, men are likely to suffer from it 9 times more than women. Statistics show that in Germany, every 5th man over 60 years or more shows signs of this syndrome.

The treatment
When the bent fingers become obstructive, microsurgery is recommended under local anaesthesia to be able to grab again correctly. It is not advisable to wait too long for the operation, otherwise in the worst cases, additional operations might be needed. The measure of everything here: If the distance between finger nail and the table top of the hand resting on its back is more than approx. 5 - 6 cm, an operation is necessary. The operation is carried out under local or general anaesthesia. The actual cut to remove the altered tissue as fully as possible generally depends on individual requirement and on the disease sDays.
