Thumb bridge joint arthritis (Rhizarthritis)
Hand surgery
This deformation of the joint that happens mostly on both sides can lead to cartilage abrasion, formation of new bones and as well as displacement of the centre hand bone. The cause: Weakness in the ligament joints. Depending on the severity, the apparent consequences include pain when idle and / or on load, decrease in the power when grabbing with the thumb, weakness of the tips, complaints in other joints and less sensitivity.

The treatment
If the ailment has progressed so far that you can no longer hold with the thumb or cannot use it all and conventional treatment can do nothing, then an operation is unavoidable. The manner in which the surgery will be carried out here too depends on the disease phase. In the early stage, ligament plastic (plastic operation on the ligament extension to remove joint instability) or osteotomy (correction of position on bone) can rectify the displacement. In an advanced arthritis, the painful joint abrasion, the displacement and the existing joint instability deepening on the indication is rectified by appropriate removal of a deformed wrist bone, ligament reconstruction, relocation of sinews or rarely through joint reinforcement.

After a rest period of approx. 4 weeks, physiotherapy and ergotherapy is very important to enable using the hand without pain.
